SEO and Page Rank are the two major methods of getting your web pages ranked well by search engines. True search engines generally list individual web pages rather than complete domains, so that every individual page in your site is capable of being listed in Google, Yahoo or any other search engine fro specific search terms used by the search engine customers.
I have frequently been asked, either personally or by email, what are the most important aspects of search engine optimization that lead to high listing. In fact, in my opinion, there are no real major techniques that are more effective than any other. Perhaps Google PageRank, commonly written as Page Rank, is the one aspect of website promotion that could figure as being the one single aspect of SEO that could help your listing more than any other.
However, I have had at least one website listed in top 5 results for a very competitive keyword with no external links whatsoever. What that indicates to me is that very good internal SEO techniques can also be very effective, irrespective of page ranking. I am not saying it will happen all the time, but if it happens in one case, then page rank cannot be as important as Google maintains.
It is my opinion that a high listing for any keyword is dependent on the accumulation of a
number of factors, and each factor must be maximized to your advantage for your web page to receive a high listing in the indices. What are these?
1. You should try to understand how search engines work. Once you understand what an index is and exactly how they collect the information from all the web pages on the internet, and allocate relevance to them for any specific search term, then you will be in a better position to optimize your website. How is the index compiled, and how do search engines look at keywords and phrases.
How is the term "SEO methods" seen different to "best SEO methods" or even just "SEO". What factors determine which of these are included in search for "best seo methods". That is what you should learn so that you are best able to use keywords.
2. What Meta tags do search engines use, and which use which ones. You should try to find that information, and then you will be better placed to use them.
3. Why should you place your title in H1 tags? When should you use H2 and H3 tags? Does bold text, italics or underlining really have any effect on the importance search engines give text formatted in that way?
4. What really is the optimum keyword density. I still read that a KD of 1% - 3% must be used. That is obvious nonsense. A 500 word web page article containing 15 instances of a keyword will be punished. What if keyword is a long-tail keyphrase such as "the best way to search engine optimize your website". IF you used that even 1% it would involve 63 words in a 700 word article. So how often should keywords really be used, including the long-tail ones.?
5. How about internal page ranking? How should your internal links be arranged, and is there any way to prevent your PR bleed out of your website. In fact, can Page Rank bleed out of your site? Does your website have any 'starting' Page Rank, or does it all have to be earned from external links.
6. Do links from a website give you the Page Rank of that website? What proportion of it do you get? Can you work it out, even approximately? Can you lose PR by linking to another web page, even if it is a reciprocal link?
If you do not know the answer to all of these questions then you desperately need my eBook 'Seocious', that answers these questions and then some.
