SEARCH ENGINES AND SEO

Knowledge of search engine SEO is necessary for anybody who wants to make the best use of their website or blog. Yes, it is possible to run a website successfully without using any search engine optimization whatsoever, and a blog can get lots of visitors if search engine SEO is completely ignored, but this is about 'making best use of', not just 'making work'. You can make a website work by using pay per click advertising - it might cost you but you will get visitors to your website. Promoting your blog on Technorati, and telling all your friends about it on MySpace, Facebook or Friendster might get you lots of visitors, but in neither of these cases will you be 'making best use of' what you have. Search engine optimization will improve trhe possibility of your website or  blog being listed on Google, and good SEO will virtually ensure it.  How high that listing is will depend upon how much you know about search engine SEO and that is the purpose of this website.  Some people know nothing about optimization, most people have a working knowledge of the basics, some understand what is needed to continually improve their search engine ranking and there are the very few that understand most of what Google are looking for - we shall focus on Google here as being the largest and most important of the search engines. It gives me over 70% of the traffic to all my websites. Some of the main components of a good SEO campaign include The right TDL (top level domain), e.g..com is best.  Google says as much in Googler. The right keyword for the content. The correct use of the Title tag and meta tags - invisible to visitors but form the search engine listing title and description. The correct use of heading tags H1, H2, H3. I never use higher. Add bold to headings for extra emphasis of the keywords within them. The use of the Alt attribute in graphics. The proper use of the robot.txt filer and/or 'noindex' attribute. Good internal linking strategy. Good external linking strategy and non-use of link farms.  The proper use of keywords and text:  the first 100 words are vey important to spiders - don't let them be navigation links. The infrequent use if keywords and use of synonyms and related text to make the page content clear to search engines. Make effective use of article marketing to advertise and promote your individual web pages.

Knowledge is Essential If you don't know what you are doing when you play with SEO you can do a lot of harm to your site. You should master the basic on-page  first, then try out some off-page techniques Too many people don't know how to do it properly, but think they do, and pass their ill-judged information on to others. Even some self-confessed search engine SEO experts make fundamental errors due tio their own misconceptions and misguided opinion. I have no opinions or theories: I use what works for me and what I read on the various Google blogs.  Staright from the horse's mouth is more believable than opinion from somebody trying to sell you their services. Keep an eye on the Google SEO forum to find out what people are thinking and doing. My one piece of advice would be write naturally for humans and keep it simple. Several of these points has made reference to writing and article marketing. The ability to write, and a knowledge of article marketing, would give you a massive weapon in your arsenal to knock your competitors dead in the water.
