Why Search Engine Optimization and Article Marketing Work Together
When search engine customers are seeking information, they use what are known as search terms to find the information they want. Different people will use different terms. Hence, one person looking for information on getting married in the Caribbean will type in 'caribbean weddings' while another might use the term 'getting married in the caribbean'.
SEARCH ENGINESEach of these people are looking for the same information, yet they are using different search terms otherwise known as 'keywords'. Each term used will provide different results. Have you ever wondered why? In fact have you ever wondered why search engines give the results that they do for any search that you carry out? Why do different search engines provide different results for the same search terms (keywords)?
The answer to that question is given on my web page 'How Search Engines Work', but right now you are best to stay here to find out how SEO and article marketing work together so powerfully.
What Are Algorithms?
Search engines occasionally use humans to determine the relevance of specific web pages to keywords, but only very rarely. Normally your website will be crawled by software scripts euphemistically referred to as spiders, presumable because of their association with webs. These scripts are programmed to seek certain variable aspects of each web page and use mathematical equations referred to as algorithms to carry out mathematical analysis on these variables to determine that relevance.
It is not expected that most people understand how algorithms are constructed and how they work to list your web pages, so here are a few of the variables that they look at. The term 'variable' simply refers to aspects of your web page that could vary from another web page on the same topic.
Important Aspects of Your Web Page
The aspects of your web page to which a search engine algorithm will pay particular attention are:
- The title of your page, that should contain the search term used by the search engine customer; in other words the keyword. This should be within H1 html tags so that the search engine software can recognize it as being important to your site. A keyword can be a single word or a phrase. Every page on your website should be designed round one keyword, and only one keyword.
- The heading of the first paragraph in your page, that should also contain the keyword for the page, and should be within H2 tags.
- It will check that the first 100 characters of the body text, within the BODY part of your html, also contain the keyword. That impresses on the search engine the importance and relevance of your web page to the search term used to find the information on your page. If your first 100 characters don't contain the keyword, then your web page cannot consider it too important, and the algorithm software will not calculate it statistically relevant to the person seeking the information.
- In order to ensure that you are not just stuffing the top of your page with the keywords, the search engine will also check the end of your body text. The keyword should be contained withing the last paragraph, and also at the very end of your page, perhaps as part of a footer.
- The algorithm also takes into account the total number of times you use the keyword. the oft-quoted 1% - 3% keyword density is no more, yet many still stick to it. Poor them! The spider will look at the above instances of the keyword and perhaps allow one more in 500 words. However, if you calculate KD by multiplying the incidences of the keyphrase by the number of words in the phrase, and then taking that as a percentage of the total word count, around 1.2% - 2% migh be appropriate.
- The concept of latent semantic analysis (not indexing) will also be carried out by the algorithm, where character strings will be analyzed for similarity to those of anagrams and other text contextually relevant to the keyword. Anagrams in themselves are insufficient, since there are few true anagrams for any word in all usage, and the context of the usage of words and terms is analyzed rather than simply the presence of these words in the text.
- Links to your web page from other pages will be part of the algorithm, and not only the number of links but the quality will be taken into account. The higher the Google PageRank of the page providing the link the better the quality, and the more other links leaving that page, the lower the quality. Always check the PR of the page your link is coming from, not the website home page that is normally quoted.
- Your internal links will also be taken into account by the algorithm.
Things You Should Know
These are only a few of the aspects of each of your web pages that an algorithm uses to calculate your listing position. There are many more, but there are also some things you should know about SEO that many people either overlook or are unaware of. These are:
Search engines generally list only individual web pages, not complete websites or domains. Website directories, such as Yahoo once was, list only websites.
A page on your website will only be crawled and listed if there is a link from another page to yours. A page with no incoming links is called an 'orphan' and can give no benefit to you if it provides a link to your site since it will never be found in a search.
A listing is relevant only for a single search term (keyword). There are different listings for every keyword. The search engine index lists web pages containing each word in a search term, and puts the listing together for any keyword combination based upon the relevance of the site to that combination.
Now, where does article marketing fit into this?
ARTICLE MARKETINGArticle marketing is a means of attracting traffic to your website and also of getting links to your website from the article directories by writing articles and submitting them to article directories.
The articles must be relevant to the keyword being used by a search engine customer, and must provide useful information. Enough, in fact, to persuade the reader to click on the link provided by you so that they can get more information on the topic of the article.
The links provided should send the readers to a page on your site that provides the information they want, and not simply your home page. It can be your home page if that provides the relevant information, but this is a great chance to get back-links to pages deep on your site. These links are highly valued.
There is a lot more to article marketing that just that, but these are the main reasons for using it. You can also get links from any websites that use your article as content, and also traffic from users of that website that also click on your link.
The way that articles are written and presented is very important in achieving these ends, and you need expert information how best to go about it.
